We are nothing if not consistent. We have our set

We are nothing if not consistent. We have our set route. We always stop at the same cafe. I have a cup of tea. We finish with a trip to the Little Wild Wood.

Luckily, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park knows how to shake things up.

This time we got towering, hand-thrown ceramics, an undulating weaving, lambs, creative bags filled with hands-on activities, blossom and mythical figures.

All pretty extraordinary, really.

And don’t worry we left it all in one piece 🫣

I booked the cheapest flights I could find, then worried about the actual planning later 🫣

This badly thought out approach to family holidays actually led us to one of the best holidays we’ve ever had last summer.

We ended up staying in the beach town of Calafell (near Barcelona) for the bulk of the time - but as our flights were to lovely Girona, I wanted to spend a little time getting to know this most stylish of Catalan cities.

Boy is Girona beautiful. But we also found some fun family friendly stuff.

I have written a full guide on my blog (link in bio or search for The Little Adventurer) with kid friendly activities, restaurants and hotels.

But as a sneak peak, here are a couple of highlights:

Sunny days are coming … and so it might be time to work on your playground bucket list. Take it from someone whose kids have almost outgrown them 😭

I’ve chosen those with extraordinary play structures or locations (and often a bit of both) across Yorkshire and North East England.

I know I have probably done South and East Yorkshire and much of the North East a bit of a disservice. Sorry!

We were meant to go to the seaside on Sunday. So I’m not entirely sure how we ended up in Wakefield.

It worked out well out, though, as we got to snoop around the newly opened @wxwakefield - a big cultural venue in the centre of town.

There were some interactive art installations, which I won’t tell you too much about as they have packed up in preparation for a huge free video gaming event this weekend 👾 (8&9 March)

There is also @grayswx (a female owned coffee shop which serves yummy cakes, toasties and hot chocolate), a dinky @theexchangetap and tex mex from @lachingada_texmex_uk 😋

Thursdays and Fridays evenings bring free live music 🎶

We then bumped into @wilshermills sculpture outside Wakefield’s gorgeous cathedral (it has the tallest spire in Yorkshire don’t you know) before driving 10 minutes over to Sandal Castle to run off some energy.

Wakefield is always fun - but it just got even better 🤸🏻

Every time we go to Farsley I ask my husband wheth

Every time we go to Farsley I ask my husband whether we should move to Farsley. It’s that kind of place.

And although the idea of packing and unpacking means it isn’t going to happen (reader: after 5 years in the U.K. we have only just hung a picture in our living room 🫣), I do like the idea of having @sunnybankmills on my doorstep. Partly because it means I might bump into Partrick and Esme when they are filming Sewing Bee 🐝.

But today we went there for the lovely Print Fair (on again tomorrow - Sunday 2nd). It was fun to look at all the brilliant pictures we might buy and then not get round to hanging up for another couple of years 🫠 and my son found a couple of cool zines.

Our big highlight, though, was the @peoplepoweredpress exhibition and workshop space in the attic. Thank you so much for showing us how to do some printing of our own ❤️

📍Raby Castle, County Durham 🏰🛝🌲🦌☕️🌼

If you Google ‘how many castles are there in England?’, you get estimates ranging from 1,500 to over 4,000. Which suggests that as a nation we’re pretty lackadaisical at counting historic sites 🤷🏻‍♀️

But numbers aside, what I can tell you is that @rabycastleofficial is one of the very best to visit with kids.

Not only does it get full marks for looking like a proper storybook castle, it also has a brilliant play structure deep in an evergreen wood.

And a ticket to enter the Plotter Forest Adventure Playground also gets you in the the walled garden (with its fun maze) and parkland (with trails and deer). Keep an eye out for holiday events - we were there for the Little Astronomer’s Trail (which runs until 2 March).

Fun fact: Raby was also the home of a rather brilliant woman who was mother to my favourite English king 👑.
